Mark Acklom had defrauded an Asian businessman out of €18million

A British man has been jailed in Benidorm for 27 months after having been convicted of serious fraud.Police also discovered that Interpol was searching for him in the UK and the name he was using was false, saying he was really called Mark Richard George Acklom. Mark Acklom had defrauded an Asian businessman out of €18million (£13million) in a property scam. He was led to believe he was investing in large property developments in Mascarat, Finestrat and Calpe.

He was sentenced because he couldn't face anymore jail time on remand. In Spain one can be held up to 4 years on remand in prison without trial.
This case I remember at the time very well. He was an important businessman who had stolen money 10 years earlier on another case and so had lived in Spain on a false passport. (he was sentenced for that actually 6 months of prison). He was therefore wanted in the UK for the original crime and was so scared of going to jail in the UK that he asked his partner to denounce him for the fraud. This would mean that a case would be outstanding in Spain and so extradition would not be possible.

After 18 months he was freed on the extradition case and so went to court to explain the fact that in fact there was no case to answer in Spain. The people who had denounced him were told that they would be sentenced for making false complaints so he was asked to "swallow the pill" which he did. As a result of now being freed on bail in Spain for the UK case he was made to complete the whole sentence for the fraud in spain instead of 50% which is the norm. He also spent the whole term in solitary confinement due to the fact that he could not cope being with thugs and rapists etc.

Once released he was arrested and returned to the UK for trial. He was acquitted after 6 months on remand. His case concerned the fact that his first son had cerebral palsy and he had needed large sums to treat that brain disorder. Years later it was discovered that no permanent loss had occurred.

I would have done the same for my son.
He then returned to Spain a free man after having spent 4 years in solitary confinement.

Not everything is what it seems. Remember that and life will be easier for all of us.
